Engine Systems Capabilities

Commercial Grade Dedication

ESI specializes in the dedication of commercial grade items intended for nuclear safety-related applications. This parts qualification process meets the requirements of 10CFR50 Appendix B and 10CFR Part 21, thereby providing our customers with assurance that the parts and services conform to applicable industry requirements.

Testing

To support our parts qualification program, ESI performs a wide variety of tests using specialized test equipment. This includes material, functional, seismic shake table, and environmental testing. ESI’s material lab utilizes:

  • Optical emissions spectroscopy
  • X-ray florescence analysis
  • Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)
  • Rockwell, Brinell, and Knoop microhardness

The functional test lab includes apparatuses to test temperature and pressure sensitive devices along with adjustable voltage and current sources for electrical testing. Within the seismic bay is a tri-axial shake table capable of duplicating customer specific seismic spectra while monitoring the component or assembly for functionality.

Controls

In addition to the worldwide nuclear distributorship for the Woodward product line, ESI has the in-house expertise to assist customers with all aspects of their controls needs. Whether it is product selection, component configuration, or functional testing ESI has the solution. The application may be to control prime mover speed or for generator voltage regulation.

For over 45 years, ESI has provided base load, peaking, and emergency diesel generator systems for stationary power applications. As backup power these units are utilized at hospitals, water and wastewater treatment plants, manufacturing facilities, telecommunications centers, electric power cooperatives, and nuclear power plants.

As the Authorized Distributor for the EMD diesel engine in the Eastern United States, plus the sole worldwide Authorized Distributor for EMD in nuclear power applications, ESI utilizes decades of proven experience and technical expertise in every new power project.

Our staff of engineers and technicians apply their knowledge and experience to meet your specific site requirements and specifications to design, procure, fabricate, assemble and test each diesel generator unit. The typical diesel generator project consists of the following features, however each system we package is a combination of decades of proven successful design combined with each customer’s unique requirements:

  • EMD medium speed (750 or 900 rpm) diesel engine prime mover
  • 50 and 60 Hz rated output from 1.2 to 7.0 MWe
  • Continuous duty (8760 hours per year) rated with 10% overload available for 2/24 hours
  • Complete generator set packaging including:
    • Diesel engine prime mover
    • Medium voltage synchronous generator
    • Steel fabricated skid
    • Custom designed and fabricated control systems
    • Auxiliary components such as cooling systems, air intake, exhaust, and fuel systems
    • Sound attenuated outdoor weather enclosures
  • Medium voltage switchgear
